Big Cob Hybrids Seed has arrived.

The time has come and all Big Cob Hybrids sold for the 2010 growing season is in the warehouse or is
en route to be delivered the week of March 8th.

2009 proved to be a tough year for seed production however, Big Cob Hybrids has sustained a consistent near perfect cold and warm germ on all seed lots.

What this means for you is that you can expect great stands and a better probability for higher end of year yields.

If you have been thinking of purchasing your seed from Big Cob Hybrids please call us today. We still have hybrid seed available for 2010 planting and can offer many different trait and genetic packages.

Liberty Link Soybeans who exciting yield results in 2009.

2009 really proved to be an excellent year for soybean and corn yields. With our offering of Liberty Link soybeans and our knowledge of existing RR1 varieties it was nice to see an alternative herbicide offering a yield bump and products that were well adapted to Nebraska.

Our experience with the B27LL and B33LL is that they both offer great yield in correct environments and are well adapted to the eastern two thirds of Nebraska. Neither variety shows a real weakness and depending on your relative maturity both can offer top end yield and excellent performance in stress conditions.

See a product profile for both the B27LL and the B33LL by clicking the links.

Supply of the B33LL is still very good. If you think you may want to try 80 acres or so of B27LL our seed supply is limited so call us today!

Resistant Super Weeds…. Dont let this be you

Just wanted to link this video from ABC News about herbicide resistant super Pigweeds.

Its a very interesting story talking about resistant weeds as well as the future of herbicides.

Check out this video!

Roundup Tech Fee for what?

Having worked with many producers now for some time glyphosate always seems to be a topic when it comes to seed. Why is it that producers like to use glyphosate no matter what?

Yes glyphosate is a great chemical and it has done great things for crop production. However there are alternatives to glyphosate that will not only reduce and fight weed resistances but it will actually get better weed control when applied correctly.

Jim McGowen with McGowen crop protection has been putting together Glyphosate alternative products for some time now. Being an expert on chemicals and chemical applications is part of the success of his business. Liberty Link and even conventional herbicide programs can fight weeds just as good if not better than some glyphosate programs.

On the seed side of things every bag of seed with glyphosate tolerance carries a pretty heavy tech fee of anywhere from $20.00 – $30.00 per bag. Some producers purchase all glyphosate seed simply because they feel they have to have it in the seed. Producers are also seeing new resistant weeds and volunteer corn on their farms.

Dont be afraid to make the switch. Liberty Link is a free trait and there are no known resistances to Liberty Link/Ignite herbicides which has the same great burndown as glyphosate. Producers should be thinking about an alternative product and a way to rotate herbicides for maximum weed control on their farms and trying a chemical like Liberty Link is a great way to manage weeds better.

Big Cob Hybrids is currently creating Liberty Link herbicide programs specifically for each producers particular needs with each seed purchase.

Big Cob Hybrids… Drought and Wind Stress Selection

Big Cob Hybrids B12-70

Big Cob Hybrids B12-70

Having a father who preached the importance of Drought and Wind Tolerance as the only way to select hybrids for sale in Nebraska is what has inspired Big Cob Hybrids defensive lineup for the 2010 growing season.

My dad, Dr. David L. Benson holds a PH.d in plant breeding and cytogenetics from Iowa State University and completed his undergrad at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.  Since his graduation several years ago he has developed some of the most succsseful hybrids of our time in his years with Mycogen, Pioneer, and other seed companies.

Dr. Benson now holds several dozen patents on hybrid and inbred seed with several major companies and has been able to consistently produce drought and wind stress tolerant hybrids.

Having ventured out on his own in 2001 with the creation of Benson Seed Research and creating a successful corn genetics program Dr. Benson went to work once again to breed for drought and wind stress tolerant genes.

Dr. Benson said ” I have been specifically advancing inbreds and selecting hybrids that show outstanding stress tolerance as well as yieldability to advance into the next year of testing.”  “Only hybrids showing well above average drought and wind stress tolerance are able to  advance in my breeding program. ”

Just recently Dr. Benson had a chance to visit our research plot near Friend, Nebraska. Dr. Benson was instrumental in selecting the hybrids in our plot and commented that “Big Cob Hybrids can have the best corn lineup in the  the state of Nebraska in three years or less.”

As for the hybrids for sale in 2010 Dr. Benson says that ” The hybrids that have been selected for sale in 2010 growing season show the kinds of characteristics that it takes to be successful in the Western Corn Belt.”
